Nibi-iro

A bluish gray like the Asiatic dayflower. In ancient times, it referred in general to subdued colors dyed with the bark of trees such as sawtooth oak and daimyo oak, including usuzumi-zome. It was an inauspicious color used for mourning clothes, and it became popular in the Edo period, when that association had been forgotten.
