Enjoy your daily color life by understanding camaille and focamaille color schemes!
"Camayeu" and "Focamayeu" color schemes—these are both unfamiliar terms, aren’t they? While "tone-on-tone" and "tone-in-tone" color schemes are terms we can generally picture, I imagine many of you are left scratching your heads when it comes to "Camayeu" and "Focamayeu" color schemes.

To put it simply, a camaieu color scheme consists of colors that are adjacent in both hue and tone. In the PCCS system, this means colors with a hue difference of 1 or less (i.e., nearly the same hue), where the tones are either identical or adjacent.

Since the colors are nearly identical, they appear monochromatic from a distance, but when viewed up close, subtle differences become apparent, creating a color scheme with a gentle, rhythmic quality.“Camaieu” (French) refers to monochromatic dyeing in textiles and monochromatic painting techniques, both of which were commonly used by European painters in the 18th century. It also refers to a gemstone used in cameos, consisting of two layers of varying shades within a single color.

----------------

The "faux" in faux camaieu means "fake" or "imitation," and this color scheme features greater differences in hue and tone compared to the camaieu color scheme (monochromatic painting). In the PCCS system, this involves a hue difference of 2–3 and using adjacent tones, though interpretations vary and there are no strict rules.

When using PCCS color swatches, the combinations for camay and faux-camay color schemes are limited.

In the worlds of apparel and interior design, these two color schemes are not always strictly distinguished in practice. However, a camay color scheme appears monochromatic with subtle differences, while a faux-camay color scheme does not appear monochromatic and clearly shows distinct color variations.

    Examples of Camay color schemes

The woman in the photo below is wearing a vertical striped pattern, but from a distance, the stripes are likely barely visible, and the outfit probably looks like a solid dark navy. When you get up close, the faint stripes become visible, giving the outfit a gentle, understated look.

Example of a Focamaille Color Scheme

The woman’s outfit below is a dress featuring a turquoise vertical stripe pattern that frames the blue at the neckline. This turquoise color has a more noticeable difference in tone compared to a camay color scheme, so the distinction should be visible even from a distance. While it is a type of tone-on-tone color scheme, it maintains a consistent sense of unity in its tones.
