A dark grayish yellow-red. The history of tea in Japan goes back to the time of Kukai and Saicho, but the custom of drinking tea apparently belonged to the ruling class. Sen no Rikyu spread the custom to the wealthy merchant class, but ordinary people apparently did not have a tea-drinking custom until sencha became widespread.
